Spell Research
Note: spell research is no longer necessary to learn spells. You can buy scrolls to learn your spells or loot them from creatures. This page will remain available for historical reference.
Component Order

Spells take from 5-8 components to cast and need to be in a particular order:

The Herb classifies spells into a group (Creature uses Hyssop, Mandrake. War uses Hawthorn, Oak, etc.) They also determine the words to the first part of a spell. Listen to other people casting to learn the herb used in other spells.

The Potion individualizes the spell, although spells can be futher classified with the Talisman. The Potion also determines the final part of the 2nd word.

The Talisman (always placed last) determines what school the spell belongs to, and whether they affect you or others or items. (For "Self" spells you much target yourself to test or it will fail even with a valid combination. "Other" spells must be targetted on someone else. Some Talismans have opposites, which give you the Other or Self spell when the Talisman is changed. Talismans also determine the gesture made when cast. (There are some exceptions to this -- Portal spells, etc.)

Taper Pattern & General Tips


When doing spell research it should take a maximum of 12 guesses to determine the 2nd level of the spell, using your starter spells as a base (12 Tapers to test). The Taper Pattern (1st taper only) makes spell research easier. If you know a level 2 spell, use the Taper Pattern to determine the first Taper of the level 3 spell; then you will only have to test 12 times for the 2nd Taper. We'll tackle the patterns for the 2nd and 3rd Tapers at another time! The Taper Pattern follows the rainbow at left.

If you know a Violet Taper follows the Iron Scarab of a Spell, you know that a Brown Taper follows the Copper Scarab, the White Taper follows the Silver, a Grey Taper follows the Gold Scarab and the Red Taper follows the Pyreal Scarab.

The 2nd and 3rd Tapers are often referred to as Random, but they can be calculated. What players are usually referring to is that the Tapers are personal, different for each player. You will not have the same formulas as someone else. All your characters, no matter the server, however, will have the same spell formulas.

Make sure you have enough mana to cast the spell when you are researching and make sure you are targetting correctly. Also, if your skill level is not high enough, you will fizzle even though you have the correct combination of components.
