During the Castling event, Spell Research came to an end. Instead of testing combinations of components, trying to hit on the right formula, NPC Scriveners began to sell scrolls (levels 1-6). Your Arcane Lore skill determines your ability to learn the spells from the scrolls. Even if you Arcane Lore skill is high, you still might not be able to read the scroll if your skill in that school of magic is too low. In the old days, players would carry around a scroll and would examine it every 15 minutes or so to gain a little xp for their Arcane Lore skill.

An alternative to spell components was also introduced during the Castling event. Each school of magic has a foci which you can purchase from the Scriveners to use for your spells in place of spell components. Foci must be used with Prismatic Tapers and they take up a slot in your backpack. If you're a four school mage, you will carry 4 Foci, taking up 4 of your available packs. Some mages prefer to still use the old fashioned method of carrying separate spell components in favor of pack space over lesser burden. Scriveners have an incredibly high mark-up rate; foci cost 25,000p each!

Certain scrolls may only be obtained by finding them in Steel Chests opened by Sturdy Iron Keys or by completing a quest. Use the links in the table below for more information on each quest scroll.

Aerlinthe Recall (Unreadable Scroll)		Transports the caster to Aerlinthe Island.
Scroll of Recall the Sanctuary		Inscribed Spell: Recall the Sanctuary. Transports the caster to Ithaenc Cathedral.
Scroll of Mt. Lethe Recall		Inscribed spell: Mount Lethe Recall. Transports the caster to the base of Mount Lethe.
Dark Flame (Nelamar's War Magic Scroll)		Shoots a dark flame at the target. The flame does 46-90 points of righteous fire damage to the first thing it hits.
Arcane Restoration (Esard's Life Magic Scroll)		Increases the caster's natural mana rate by 100%.
Unnatural Persistance (Geraux's Life Magic Scroll)		Increases caster's natural healing rate by 100%.
Ulgrim's Scroll		A partially digested sheet of paper, apparently the remains of a spell scroll.
Recall to the Singularity Caul		Inscribed spell: Recall to the Singularity Caul Teleports caster to the Singularity Caul.
Conclave Spells		This scroll appears to have a spell to enhance the strength of a fellowship etched upon the flesh-like paper.

Of course, an old time-honored way for obtaining scrolls is by looting them off creatures you kill. Creature drops were revised in early 2004 so that players should be able to find scrolls suitable for their level.
