What
in the world would bring a traveler to Uziz? A lot more now that Gersan
the Sureshot, Gervena the Oblique, and Gerloc the Defender have set up
shop! Give them a powerful gem, more powerful than a Scintillating gem,
and they'll make you something pretty!
For background on geomancy and the menhir rings which act as portals to the
Vestibule dungeons, or on the Vestibule dungeons themselves, read the
Breaking
the Crystal Core and the Zone's
The
Vestibule Quests.
Gersan the Sureshot tells you, "If you can find a gem more powerful than a mere scintillating gem, I would be interested in it. Give me such a gem and I will use it to craft a magical bow for you. The bow will be so powerful, in fact, that normal ammunition will not work on it. You will have to come to me for arrowheads as well."
Gersan the Sureshot tells you, "I am not a crossbow maker, however, so if you need a crossbow you will have to attach a stock to the bow yourself."
Gervena the Oblique tells you, "I have heard of powerful gems, more powerful than the mediocre gems you bring to those so-called master smiths. If I had such a gem, I could make a powerful spell-casting orb with unique properties."
Gervena the Oblique tells you, "Of course, if you are not a masterful mage, you should speak with on of my younger brothers."
Gerloc the Defender tells you, "Greeting. My siblings and I traveled here seeking gems of great power. I hear that there are some master armorers who craft suits of armor from fused gems. Those are beneath my notice. Bring me something even more powerful than a scintillating gem and I will craft a great and unique shield for you.
To begin the Caulnalain Vestibule quest,
you'll need a Caulnalain Key from a
Shadow Lieutenant. Everyone going will
need their own key. Shadow Lieutenants are commonly
found in Northern Osteth near Stonehold and the Crater, and also in Southern
Osteth along the Linvak Range.
Note: extra keys may be
given to
collectors in exchange for 2,500 xp and 6,000 pyreal.
To
reach the Caulnalain Vestibule, run NW from Holtburg to 68.6N x 5.5E, or send someone ahead
of time to tie to the portal and give you a ride. A
quicker route is from the Crater (see
shortcuts).
You can take the Windrune Cottages
settlement
portal at 66.4N 14.3E.
You'll exit at 62.6N, 3.2E, a short run from the entrance.
The dungeon is
restricted to Levels 26+.
There are two parts to the
dungeon. The first part, with its nasty Panumbris
Shadows,
Shadow Cysts (Level 89) and
Grievvers,
can be skipped if you have a little skill at jumping -- recommended 200+.
Shortcut
Get a running start
towards the entrance portal, hold down your space bar all the way to full
jumping power, and let go, just as you reach the portal. The timing is very
important! The trick is to hit the top of the portal with your feet. Keep
holding down the forward arrow the entire time. Don't let go at all until
you've come to a complete stop. With any luck, you will have made it
across to the gate area, instead of falling down into the pit which begins
the first section of the dungeon.
If you have a few jumping
impaired people in your group (like me!), they might need to try several
(or 8 or 9 ;) times before they master the jump. If you
don't have recall, you'll need to have
someone tied to the surface portal who can jump down into the pit and cast
a portal to get you back to the entrance to try again. If you're unsuccessful, you
can simply navigate the first section of the dungeon until you reach the
gate area.
Note: Several players
have reported it is not necessary to take a running start. If you have a
jump skill of at least 165, stand close to the portal hold the space bar
all the way down. Press the forward button, the release the space bar. If
you miss, you were standing either too close or too far from the portal.
Thanks to Kurawa
of WE!

You can also reach the gate area without using the shortcut. From the
entrance jump into the pit and fight the group of
Shadows below.
Take the passage heading west and make a right at the split. Take the
first left into the room with lightning effects. Take the south passage
out and make an immediate right, then the next left. Head up the ramp and
fight more Shadows in an open room, then take the passage to the east.
From here just follow the passage all the way to final room with the
Caulnalain Gate.
Use your Caulnalain Key on
the Gate to receive a Caulnalain Portal
Gem. Wait! Don't use it yet! Time to buff!
Caulnalain Chamber
Map:
Caulnalain Chamber
You'll want everyone in
your group to use their gem at the same time. There will be a group of 3-4
Shadows on the other side when you enter the 2nd section. There's also
another surface portal close to where you drop. Be careful of
auto-attacking! Shadows may drag you very close to the portal, and if you
don't have a 2nd key, you may just be out of luck if you get sucked in.
From the entrance take the tunnel
East. At the first intersection make a right, heading South. You'll
encounter 3 or so Shadows. At the next intersection head Left past the
Shadow Lieutenant. At the larger room, take the West corridor, straight
ahead.
You'll be overlooking another room with
several Shadows below. Use this opportunity to Imperil or Vuln before
jumping below. After killing the Shadows take the East passage and then
make your first left heading North. You'll encounter another group of 3
Shadows. At the next intersection take the left passage heading East
and fight your way past the Caulnalain Shadow Leader (Level
58). When you hit the area with the large blue
crystals, rebuff if necesary, then jump again to the
level below.
Note:
The Caulnalain Shadow Leader drops a Throbbing Lump
which can be translated in Cragstone.
Once you've jumped into
the pit, take the passage East then make a
left heading Northeast. At the end of the corridor you'll come to the room
with the Cualnalain Crystal (Level 126). It will be surrounded by a few
Caulnalain Satellite Fragments (Level 26).
Kill the Caulnalain Crystal
(use Bludgeoning or a low Piercing attack) for your prize:
the Caulnalain Gem! The Gem is no-drop, no-give and is on a one week real
life timer. The Crystal is on a 5 minute spawn, so it's not too bad a wait
for your entire group to get a Gem.
Return with your Caulnalain Gem to Uziz for
your prize, either an Orb, a Bow or a Shield. Double click the NPCs first
so you make sure you turn your gem in to the correct brother.
Portals to Uziz are located in the Haven Residential
Quarters in Lytelthorpe (0.6N, 51.6E) and Tou-Tou (28.2S, 95.6E).
To make a Crossbow, you must attach a stock.
Bring Barnar the Tinker in Stonehold
68.8N, 21.5W
a Wood Golem Heart and he will craft it into a stock for you.
To make
an Atlatl (added during
A
Perfect Paradox), give Gershan your bow. He will give you an Atlatl in
exchange!
The items may not be given, but they may drop on death. You may, however,
tinker the items with ivory. During the Should
the Stars Fall event, the value was reduced to make them less likely to be
lost. Caulnalain Keys were also changed to be givable.
Fenmalain Bows, Crossbows and Atlatls can only be used with Crystal Tipped
Arrows, Quarrels and Darts
-- pretty to look at, but not too practical! ;-)
During
A Perfect
Paradox
Crystal ammunition was also updated. Instead of each Crystal Arrowhead making 10
Arrows/Quarrels/Darts, they now make 250!!
Note: to
make Crystal Tipped Arrows, Quarrels or Darts, give Crystal Shards to Gersan the
Sureshot and he will give you Crystal Arrowheads in return. Use fletching to
attach them to Arrowshafts, Quarrelshafts or Atlatl Dart Shafts.
If you haven't gotten too
grossed out yet by carrying around your Throbbing Lump, take it to Bretself the
Translator in Cragstone. He will give you the Shadow Missive in return.
You give Bretself the Translator Throbbing Lump.
Bretself the Translator tells you, "Ugh. Watch where
you hold that, young one, I don't want slime on our nice clean floor. Let
me see..."
Bretself the Translator tells you, "Hm... A message from... How
interesting."
Bretself the Translator gives you Shadow Missive.

Shadow Missive
If you want more adventure, you can venture
deeper into the Caulnalain dungeon. It's often camped with people hunting
Fragments, but it sure is pretty and worth a look! At the very bottom is
another surface portal.
