From the
Discoveries event.
Town Crier tells you, "The
Departmen [sic] of Fish and Game, the fellows who
brought us the chess boards, are working to kick start our fishing industry.
Just talk to the Tackle Masters who are stationed near the new fishing holes
for help."
Town Crier tells you, 'You can find them in the Nexus Towns of Holtburg,
Yaraq and Shoushi. I have also heard of some other scenic fishing holes as
well. Ahem...'
Town Crier tells you, 'Why yes, now I remember. There are also some fishing
holes in Nanto, Rithwic and Cragstone. I've fished near the waterfalls in
Nanto and found it quite relaxing.'
Sometimes you
just want to kick back and relax, put away the sword, and ponder life's
ineffable mysteries. And what better way to do that than by fishing!! To
begin, grab a C Note (no pyreals!), a Wood Golem Heart or Golem Jo, and your
patience, and head to one of the new Tackle Masters.
Cragstone Waterfall - 29.0N, 43.9E
Shoushi Waterfront - 32.1S, 74.2E
Holtburg Waterfront - 43.0N, 34.1E
Yaraq Waterfront - 22.0S, 2.2W
Nanto Waterfall- 52.6S, 80.8E
Rithwic Bridge - 10.7N, 58.7E
Text:
Fishing Made Easy
Tackle Master
tells you, "You need three things to be a good fisherman."
Tackle Master tells you, "First, you need a fishing pole. I can make one for
you, but I'll need a Golem Jo or a Wood Golem Heart to assemble it. I
remember my first fishing pole, it was just a stick with some string. I
couldn't catch a cold with that thing."
Tackle Master tells you, "Second, you need a fishing license. I sell
licenses for a C note, allowing you to fish for a whole day."
Tackle Master tells you, "And last, you need patience. Just enjoy the peace
that fishing brings and talk to your fellow fisherman, but don't believe all
their fish stories, heh."
Tackle Master tells you, "Here take this fishing guide. It has everything
you need to know."
Tackle Master gives you Fishing Made Easy.
Tackle Master tells you, "I license fisherman for a C note. That covers you
for an entire day."
Tackle Master tells you, "If you still need help getting ready to fish I
sell a good beginner's fishing guide for only a few coins. Just hand me
whatever you can and I'll give you a guide."
You give Tackle Master Wood Heart.
Tackle Master tells you, "Your giving your heart to me? Bwahaha, just
joking, this should make a nice pole. I'll just carve it and assemble your
fishing pole. Wait here a moment."
Tackle Master gives you Fishing Pole.
Tackle Master tells you, "There you go. The string part with the hook goes
into the water and you hold onto the stick part. I can't tell you how many
beginner fisherman just toss the whole thing into the water. Of course they
always claim they lost it to some huge whale or something."
You give Tackle Master Trade Note (10,000).
Tackle Master tells you, "So you want to go fishing, eh? Ok then, lets see
here..."
Tackle Master tells you, "You know, I used to fish back in Ispar. One time I
had this giant fish on the line and it was a real fighter. Had to lash...
oh, right, sorry, you're all set. Remember the license is only good for a
day, so catch a big one before then!"
Tackle Master tells you, "Oh, I also supply the local grocers with fresh
fish, so I'll buy your catch from you if you like. I pay a lot more than
most grocers will, because I know the fish are fresh. Good luck and remember
to throw the small ones back."
Once you've
received your pole in exchange for the heart or Jo, and your license for the
C Note (good for 24 hours), you're ready to cast! Find an unoccupied fishing
hole (one of the blue dots on your radar) and throw a line into the water
(equip the pole in your weapon slot and double click the hole or use your
"R" key).
As you fish,
your skill will increase. (To see your skill, click on the burden icon in
the upper right of your screen.) At the lowest skill, you'll catch Minnows
and Guppies. As you become more proficient, you'll begin catching Mollies,
Fish, and finally Large Fish! A nearby sign also indicates that when you
catch a specific number of fish, you can receive a Title Token for a new
Title!

License: C Note (See Tackle Master)
Fishing Rewards (Caught)
Minnow 400
Guppy 100
Molly 100
Fish 100
Large Fish 300
After having caught the number of fish required turn in at least one of that
fish type to the Tackle Master to receive your Title Token.
Below is a
list of the approximate fishing skill needed to catch the next size fish.
Minnows - Fishing Skill
0
Guppies - Fishing Skill 0
Mollies - Fishing Skill 50
Fish - Fishing Skill 125
Large Fish - Fishing Skill 225
You can also
increase your skill by releasing fish back into the fishing hole. The
easiest way to do this is by mapping a "Give Selected Item" key. Catching
Minnows will not increase your skill; however, as you become a more
proficient fisher, you can gain points by catching certain colors of the
larger fish (see tables to the right).
Once caught,
fish can be sold to the Tackle Master for pyreal (see table to right for
values), or they can be released back into the water. If your fish are in
good condition when they are released, you can gain even more skill points!
Note: Fish
are stackable, but since they must be turned in one at a time, you probably
won't want to stack them. If your backpack is full, you will not be able to
accept the fish or the skill points.
0 points
You give Fishing Hole [fish type].
It seems a bit stunned, but after
a few seconds it swims away.
1 point
The fish splashes happily into the water. It seems shaken, but swims away
strongly.
2 points
You give Fishing Hole [fish type].
You give Fishing Hole White Minnow.
The fish splashes happily into the water.
Note: the uncolored regular
"Fish" has its own message!
You give Fishing Hole Fish.
The fish plops into the water and slowly sinks to the bottom
Timing is everything! To
catch fish larger than Minnows, your best success comes by timing your cast
when the fish are jumping. Once you figure out the timing of your particular
fishing hole, you can get a point almost every time! There are two
animations for fishie movement, a high jump and a quick twirl which happens
just under the surface. If your hook is in the water during one of the
animations, you'll catch a point giving fish, as long as you have the skill
for it!
In addition to fish, you may also catch trinkets or old
junk, such as jewelry, clothing or weapons. The rusted items are
particularly desirable, as they can be salvaged! You'll receive 6 units of
the following salvage materials:
Rusted Battle Axe - Copper
Rusted Dirk - Pyreal
Rusted Mace - Iron
Rusted Medalion - Gold
Rusted Nekode - Bronze
Rusted Shouken - Brass
Rusted Tachi - Steel
Rusted Trident - Silver
Other odd
items, such as an Old Boot, a Trunk of Bones, a Ball of Gunk or a Skeleton
have been pulled from the waters. The rusted items and other retrieved items
may be placed on housing hooks.

As you fish, your mind may wander. If you cast and don't
catch a fish, random thoughts pop through your head:
You fail to catch anything. A fish swims by ignoring your line. You could
swear it's almost mocking you.
You fail to catch anything. You think: Fish may be the only animal on Dereth
that haven't tried to kill me yet.
You fail to catch anything. You
muse: Les poissons, les poissons...
You hooked something!
Unfortunately it appears to be a fellow fisherman. Hehe, better run.
You fail to catch anything. You
muse: I can finally fish. Wonder if we'll get to hunt chickens soon?
You fail to catch anything. Maybe you need to switch what type of bait
you're using.
You fail to catch anything. You muse: F is for your fins, I wish I had some
too. I is for I'd like to catch a large fish that is blue. S is for standing
in the water all the time. And H is for Hagrajag I just made up to fit this
rhyme.
You fail to catch anything and spill your beer in the process.
You fail to catch anything, but your line gets caught in some water weeds.
You fail to catch anything. You wonder: If I were a fish where would I be
right now?
You fail to catch anything. Where the heck are all the fish?!
You fail to catch anything. You think: Red fish
You fail to catch anything. You wonder: What would Bael'Zharon do?
You fail to catch anything. You wonder: How did he make those boots anyway?
You fail to catch anything. You worry: What if we over-fish and wind up
without any fish? It happened to the chickens.
You fail to catch anything. You muse: I catch a fish. I cook a fish. I eat a
fish. I like it.
You fail to catch anything but this is so peaceful.
You fail to catch anything. You wonder: Can fish cast magic? Maybe something
like Fishing Ineptitude Other or Turn Hook VI.
You fail to catch anything. You wonder: What would a virindi altered fish
taste like?
You fail to catch anything. You muse: I fish therefore I am.
You fail to catch anything. You think: Sure could use a cold one.
You fail to catch anything. You muse: Fish, fish,
fish, all I want is fish.
You fail to catch anything. You wonder: If I were a fish where would I be
right now?
You fail to catch anything.
Nope, not a thing.
You catch... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
You fail to catch anything. You wonder: Why can't I just zap all the fish
with Alset's Coil?
You fail to catch anything. You think: Two fish.
You fail to catch anything. There's nothing like the fresh air and fishing
though.
You fail to catch anything. You muse: Wish I could cast Fish Seeker VI on
this thing.
You fail to catch anything. You sing: Come on and bite on the line fish.
Come on and get on my hook fish fish.
You fail to catch anything. You
think: Blue fish
You fail to catch anything. You
sing ... I move to where I'd hoped they'd be.
You fail to catch anything. You wonder: Do fish
lifestone?
You sing: Fish heads, fish heads...
You fail to catch anything. You think: Just have to catch one more blue one
then I can decorate my house with fish.
You fail to catch anything. I wonder if Queen Elysa fishes?
You hooked something. Unfortunately it appears to be your ear. Ewwww, that's
gonna hurt.
You fail to catch anything. You
think: I'm having fish for dinner tonight!
You caught something! Arghh! The line broke!
You fail to catch anything. You sing: If I had a fish, I'd cook it up for
dinner, I'd cook it up for lunch in a sizzlin' frying pan.
You fail to catch anything. You sing: Fishie, Fishie, Fishie Fish, swimming
in the fishie sea.
You fail to catch anything. You muse: Maybe I'm left handed...
You fail to catch anything. Yarrrr, this be the life.
Your line isn't ready yet to cast.
You fail to catch anything. You sing: Come on and bite on the line fish.
Come on and get on my hook fish fish.
You fail to catch anything. You
sing: I once saw a fish that was big as a barn. It took my line'n hook and
it ripped off my arm! I swam for dry land as the fish came around and I'm
lucky to be here cause I shoulda drowned. Ooooh!!! a whale of a fish makes a
hell of a yarn, but an actual whale... can rip off your arm! So don't be
lookin' for big fish unless you are strong and can reel in a whale like the
one in my song!
