East Outpost -
Magical Lights
Inou-Kon Kou sits close to the cooking fire of the East Nanto Outpost (52.5S, 85.4E). Calling himself the Keeper of Lights, he requests that you help him recover a reference book on Magical Lights that was stolen by (what else?!) drudges.
Speak to him
and he'll give you directions to a dungeon to the east, marked with
candles at the entrance.
Inou-Kon Kou tells you, "I
am a keeper of lights, seeking to illuminate the paths of the lost, as the
good Elders would have me do."
Inou-Kon Kou tells you, "I once filled an entire
dungeon with glorious candles to help wanderers. Recently, some creature or
other stole my reference book on magical lights."
Inou-Kon Kou tells you, "I suspect my book was stolen
by drudges, who have lately taken up residence in the dungeon I filled with
lights, the Kindled Path."
Inou-Kon Kou tells you, "Ungrateful creatures. The dungeon is to the east of
here. Look for the candles that mark the entrance."
Stop by the Lifestone at 52.4S and 85.4E and then head east. In the saddle between two hills, you'll see the first candle at 52.8S, 86.1E. The path of lights will lead you to
Lytaway Dungeon at 52.6S 86.7E (Restricted to Levels 1-20).

Lytaway Dungeon
The exit portal is not close to the entrance, but rather almost at the bottom. Fortunately, the path is fairly easy to follow and the most treacherous foes between you and the exit are Drudge
Sneakers
who won't attack unless you do. Along your way you will also find a broken taper. Pick it up for use later.
To get the book you must head one level below that of the exit portal. Here
there are multiple Sneakers and a Drudge Prowler to boot. In a small room, you'll will find the book lying on the ground, next to another broken taper. A nearby chest contains a variety of items.
Many Empyrean lights seem to require no maintenance. Most look like normal orange flame-base light. They can be found in dungeons throughout
Dereth, as reported by Alatar Locke. But lately reports have com in of fire that is blue or green. Another topic entirely is magical glows that have no fire as a source...
- Magical Lights
You give Inou-Kon Kou
Inou-Kon Kou's Book.
Inou-Kon Kou tells you, "Ah, well done. The drudges
seem to like the smell of the book's binding, I guess."
Inou-Kon Kou tells you, "Anyway, here is a reward for you. From here, you may
wish to see what else may be done in Nanto. By the way, if you've found any
broken tapers, I think the Archmage's Apprentice would like them more than I
do."
Inou-Kon Kou gives you 200 Pyreals.
Inou-Kon Kou gives you 2 Potions of Healing.
You've earned 4000 experience.
In addition, if you give him one of the broken tapers,
he'll give you 25 pyreal and direct you to the Archmage's Apprentice, Shin Ro, in
Nanto (52.3S, 81.6E) where you can exchange your broken taper for an
additional 45 pyreal.
You give Inou-Kon Kou
Broken Taper.
Inou-Kon Kou tells you, "This probably was made of inferior wax, but I will
pay you for it. Next time, take these to the Archmage's Apprentice."
Inou-Kon Kou gives you 25 Pyreals.
North Outpost - Water Bottle
The North Nanto Outpost (49.1S, 81.7E) quest sends you on an errand to recover a Bottle of Water from the nearby
Water Temple. When you
speak to Ji Ra Ping, he asks you to deliver a letter to the Archmage's Apprentice,
Shin Ro, in town. The mage tower can be found at the far west end of town (52.3S, 81.6E). Shin Ro is also the Nanto Society Agent for the
Exploration Society Letter Quests.
Ji Ra Ping tells you,
"Can you please help me? Here is the letter I would like you to give Shin
Ro, who is the Archmage's Apprentice in Nanto itself. He will give you a
small reward."
Ji Ra Ping gives you Letter to Shin Ro.
Letter to Shin Ro:
"Greetings, Shin Ro. I am still here at the outpost, after all this time. How fares things with you in town? And do you have any more of that marvelous water? Nothing else tastes like it, except the rare Empyrean brews that find their way here sometimes."
When you give Shin Ro Letter to Shin Ro he'll give you a key and ask you
to retrieve the Water Bottle in the Water Temple on the mountain to the
west.
Shin Ro tells you, "I
have been contracted by the Dereth Exploration Society to help them in
their outreach program towards the Isparians who find themselves newly
exiled in Dereth. Here is a book that explains their mission. I am also
giving you a list describing the locations of the nearest stamp and
portals to other towns. If you collect any of the Society's stamped
letters, you may bring them back to me for a reward."
Shin Ro gives you A Book of Quests for New
Explorers.
Shin Ro gives you Nanto Information Guide.
Shin Ro tells you, "By the way -- if you haven't yet
done so, you might want to visit Ji Ra Ping at the North Outpost, or
Inou-Kon Kou at the East Outpost. They often have tasks for young adventurers."
You give Shin Ro Letter to Shin Ro.
Shin Ro tells you, "Oh, another letter from Ji-Ra? My thanks. If you find
the Water Temple on the mountain to the west and retrieve the Water
Bottle, I will repay you."
Shin Ro gives you Key.
After you stop by the nearest lifestone at 52.7S, 80.2E, head west from the mage tower. The Water Temple (52.1S, 80.3E) is
restricted to levels 1-20.
Map:
Water Temple
Inside you'll find a horde of
Drudge Skulkers, and the toughest opponent to be faced is a Drudge Slinker. The quickest route to the Water Bottle is by taking the first right you can. Then go past the four Sho screens (they look like mountain paintings) until you see a door. Head in and down. Make a left to a gated door, guarded by a Drudge Slinker. Open the gate and you'll see two chests in the back. Use your key on the one on the left to find the water.
When you return the Bottle of Water to Shin Ro, you'll be rewarded.
You give Shin Ro Bottle of Water.
Shin Ro tells you, "Wonderful. Here is a reward for
your efforts."
Shin Ro gives you 2 Potions of Healing.
Shin Ro gives you 100 Pyreals.
You've earned 4000 experience.
You can also give Shin
Ro the broken taper from Lytaway dungeon.
You give
Shin Ro Broken Taper.
Shin Ro tells you, "Ah,
I do take those. Inuo-Kon must have sent you."
Shin Ro gives you 45 Pyreals.
Miyako's Moonstone
A lesser known Nanto Starter Quest begins by talking to the poet Miyako Nujou-Wah in Nanto proper. She accidentally left behind a volume of poetry in some tunnels east of town and seeks your help to recover it.
This quest also gives you a chance to read a few in-game haikus!
Miyako Nujou-Wah tells
you, "Perhaps you can assist me. I am known as Miyako, the poet. I left a
precious volume of my poetry in some pretty tunnels east of here when I was
searching for inspiration. Were you to return the poems to me, I would
reward you."
After speaking with Miyako Nujou-Wah at 52.5S, 82.0E, head East on the ridge above the town smith.
You'll see the Portal to
Mysterious Tunnels at 52.8S, 82.9E. The entrance is restricted to Levels 1-20. Inside, the passages glow with different colors. Head south down the green corridors, past the green hedges to find the book Miyako seeks. If you wish to explore the other passages, the East route contains a chest with decent newbie treasure.

swirling purple mist

and yet I remain
watch the swan swimming
splendid, tranquil floating bird

Miyako Nujou-Wah is thrilled to have her poetry returned to her. She'll
give you Miyako's Moonstone and some experience as a reward.
You give Miyako Nujou-Wah
Reflections of a Portal.
Miyako Nujou-Wah tells you, "Oh, thank you most
sincerely. I have been quite distraught over its loss but have been unable
to retrieve it myself. Take this moonstone as a token of my gratitude."
Miyako Nujou-Wah gives you Miyako's Moonstone.
You've earned 2000 experience. |

Mysterious Tunnels
Nanto's most most striking landmark is the beautiful Blue Ghost Falls, just west of town. Legend has it that the spirit of Kushina Naidu, a wizard who perished while battling a Gigas Lugian warlord, can sometimes be seen standing on the shores of the Falls.
