Trothyr's Hammer & Shield

On the road from Cragstone to Rithwic you can find an apple seller who sells Tart Apples (13.6N, 50.7E). In addition to this specialty food, he also sells a rumor to a nearby dungeon and a key: Trothyr's Rest Key.

Trothyr's Rest Rumor:
Long ago, I had a friend named Trothyr. A mighty warrior was he; I heard once that he was among the first to join up with Elysa Strathelar's band. But years ago he was slain, all alone, in a dungeon since known as Trothyr's Rest. Why did he go alone? I do not know, save that he whispered to me that he feared a diabolical device lay at the bottom of Trothyr's Rest.

He was full of fear and muttered something about the swelling ranks of evil, so he went in haste and secrecy. That was Trothyr's way; hot-headed and overly proud was he, as well as quick to suspect evil and treachery without proof.

I found him just inside the entrance. He had been mortally wounded by a lord of the undead, he told me, and had crawled back to seek me. With his dying breath, he said also that he had been to the dungeon's bottom, and had there been both relieved and angered.

There, he said, lay a sure sign of Asheron's forgiveness to what he called murderers. Then he spoke no more, and I buried him myself under the open sky .

Trothyr's Rest is located a short distance away at 10.4N, 54.9E. The entrance portal may not be tied or summoned to, and there are no level restrictions. Inside you'll find a few Azure Gromines near the entrance, and Liches and a Lich Lord further in.

The entrance room is safe for buffing. To find your way to the Hammer and Shield, head east past the surface portal until you come to a "T". Take a left through a room with some tables and chairs guarded by and Azure Gromnie. Keep left until you see a large room below you. You can jump down and head west to the doorway, or you can just keep heading left until you come to the ramp going down into the room. From there, keep heading down until you reach a room with a locked door and an Undead. Use your Trothyr's Rest Key to open the door on the west wall (or use lockpick -- resistance 125).

Just ahead you'll come to a split. Take the left (south) path past a Lich until you reach a room with a Lich Lord and about 4-5 Liches. This room also contains a nice chest which may spawn Level V gems and jewelry. After defeating the Liches, head east onto a catwalk area. Look to your right and you'll see a doorway on the east wall. You'll need to hop across (a small tapping jump). A lich is on the other side. If you miss and fall below, simply take the ramp up and around and try again. Once across, take the ramp down (NE).

You are now approaching Trothyr's Doom -- a large room with 4 alcoves, each which may contain several Liches. The Hammer and Shield spawn on the floor in the alcove directly across from where you enter. You can jump from alcove to alcove at the corners. The items spawn about every 10 minutes. There's no timer on the quest so you may get more than one. Both the Hammer and Shield may be dropped or given away.

Once you've defeated the Liches above, you can jump into the pit to explore the area below. Go through the door and follow the corridor to find Asheron's Altar (used to return to non-PK status).

To exit, either recall out or follow the ramp up from the Altar room, up, up, up until you dead end at a ledge. You'll be jumping down into a room just south of the room where you killed the Lich Lord. Head north and back to the split. From there continue north (right path), hug the right wall until you need to jump down again. There is only one path to choose from here. When you pass the area with the Swamp Rats and Undead and loot chests, you are almost to the surface portal.
