The Yaraq - Cove Apple starter quest ends with the beginning of the Mad Star quest. After you return the stolen goods from the Sea Temple Catacombs to Lubziklan al-Luq, you'll receive a Bulletin which mentions Ma'yad bin Ibsar's missing brother.

Lubziklan al-Luq tells you, "You know, since you've been so helpful to me, perhaps you could also help my friend Ma'yad ibn Ibsar. Her brother is missing, and she is very worried."
Lubziklan al-Luq gives you Bulletin.
Lubziklan al-Luq tells you, "You can find Ma'yad in the bar in Yaraq proper."

Rumor: Bulletin

Head into town and speak to Ma'yad ibn Ibsar at the Cerulian Cove tavern (21.7S, 1.6W) for more information.

Ma'yad ibn Ibsar tells you, "Hail, traveler. Have you encountered a man named Abmim ibn Ibsar? He is my brother, who foolishly listened to those who whisper of an unsafe freedom to be gained in the Direlands."
Ma'yad ibn Ibsar tells you, "We have not heard from him in several months, and begin to worry. If you bring me news of him, I would reward you as well as I may."
Ma'yad ibn Ibsar tells you, "The last we heard, he had finally accepted some honest work from Akyafi the Translator. Perhaps Akyafi, who resides upstairs, can tell you more."

As she suggests, head to the rooftop and speak to the local translator, Akyafi ibn Sumwar.

Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "I am a humble scholar from Zaikhal. Of late, we have heard of the unusually large number of Drudges in the hills around the Yaraq Cove."
Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "They seem to gather near the ruin of the Empyrean port on the far side of the cove, where the Mad Star flickers. Perhaps you could investigate, and bring me back something which would explain their presence?"
Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "I recently sent young Abmim to investigate, but he has not yet returned."
Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "If you are having difficulty locating the Mad Star, you may buy directions from the barkeeper, Jubal. He's afraid of the Mad Star; ask him instead how to reach the Pillars of the Inner Sea."

Rumor: Directions to the Pillars of the Inner Sea

Before heading to the Pillrs, you may want to bind yourself to the Yaraq Lifestone. You can also purchase protective gems from Drawohan the Gem Seller and services from the local healer at 21.4S, 1.6W.

Travel along the beach heading north and you will catch sight of the Ruined Drudge Tower (21.3S, 4.2W) with the purple "mad star." Be careful! The surrounding area is dangerous, and you may encounter a Water Wisp near the pillars. The tower itself is full of drudges (Prowlers, Servants, Slaves and Slinkers). If you stand below the tower at approximately 21.2S, 4.2W, the Drudges on top will see you and will jump off the tower to fight. One will be carrying the Scrawled Note. For now, store it in your pack to return to Akyafi later. Previous adventurers report he'll reward you and ask you to explore the crypt below.

You give Akyafi ibn Sumwar Scrawled Note.
Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "I have never before heard of a Drudge carrying paper! It is well known that they are far too feebleminded to understand the written word. Allow me to reward you for this fascinating discovery."
You've earned 5,000 experience.
Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "I wonder what this means? Give me a moment; I believe I may be able to translate it."
Akyafi ibn Sumwar gives you Translation.
Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "There you are. This is ... intriguing. I wish to study this more closely. In the meantime, I would like you to investigate the Mad Star more carefully. Search the nearby Crypt, if you would, and bring me anything you find."

Rumor: Translation

At the top of the tower you'll find a button on the side of the wall. Push it to open the entrance of the Under Cove Crypt. A note from Abmim to his sister lies on the ground nearby. Pick it up and save it to bring back to his sister in Yaraq. She'll be relieved to know her brother is rejecting his life of crime!

Rumor: A Note to Ma'yad

Map: Under Cove Crypt
Levels: all
Creatures:
Undead, Zombie, Lich, Mad Star Marionette, Sand Golem

As you enter the Crypt, you'll be attacked by numerous Undead. You'll also be assaulted with debuffs from a Mad Star Marionette! This is definitely something Akyafi would want to know about! To reach the Marionette, keep to the right from the drop point. You'll soon spy the Mad Star Marionette through the open windows of a small stone room. You can see the entrance to the room across the way, but you won't be able to get to it from where you're standing. To reach the Marionette, jump to the level below and head to the north end of the room. Take the passage on the west wall and run up the ramp. You can now access the stone room to your west. Kill it and retrieve its soggy, sloshy head!

Note: This dungeon also contains a Runed Chest (Lockpick 100)!

You're anxious to get the disgusting head back to Yaraq, but what of Abmim? You've yet to learn his fate. If you explore the shoreline a little bit further, you'll have more news for Ma'yad. Abmim's corpse bobs in the water near 2 pillars a 22.3S, 4.7W, guarded by 4 Shallow Sharks. A dagger, ill-gotten gains from his life of crime, is still on his body.

Retrieve his dagger and lifestone recall back to Yaraq to pass on the sad news to his sister Ma'yad.

You give Ma'yad ibn Ibsar Abmim's Jambiya.
Ma'yad ibn Ibsar tells you, "Ah, Abmim, I knew you would one day run afoul of something. He that chooses a thief's life has it stolen from him early. My brother became a brigand and murderer, friend traveler."
Ma'yad ibn Ibsar tells you, "Be not as foolish as he - do not lightly discard the protection this mage Asheron provides. But, as I promised, you have earned a reward."

You've earned 7,500 experience.

At least you are able to give Ma'yad ibn Ibsar some more comforting news about her brother's final fate:

You give Ma'yad ibn Ibsar A Note to Ma'yad.
Ma'yad ibn Ibsar tells you, "Abmim, my brother! Ah, to learn that at the last you had renounced your evil ways! This gives me great joy and great pain - joy that you came to your sense, and pain that it came too late!"
You've earned 7,500 experience.
Ma'yad ibn Ibsar tells you, "Traveler, you have eased my troubled heart. Thank you."

And now to finally rid yourself of that head!!

You give Akyafi ibn Sumwar Mad Star Marionette's Head.
Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "What is this? Can this be the creature the drudges' note referred to?"
Akyafi fishes a note from his pocket and reads it carefully.
Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "No ... no ... I do not ... No, I do not know. I must study!"
Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "But thank you, friend."

You've earned 25,000 experience.
Akyafi ibn Sumwar tells you, "If you are looking for more adventure, you might want to peruse the rumors that Jubal has at the bar. Or perhaps you should journey to Shoushi. I hear that there are many good people there who may need some help!"

Yaraq was formed when the wizard Raqur al-Hayra led a group of Gharu'ndim across the A'mun Desert to a beautiful cove along the coast of the Inner Sea. He plunged his staff into the earth and fresh water burst forth. Alas, Raqur was killed by a Mu-miyah archmage before the town was completed, so he never had the chance to see this charming oasis develop into the thriving town it is today.
