November  2002 - How to Break Into Trading?

Hello Maggie,
First off, I would like to say that your site is may favorite and only site for AC and soon-to-be AC2. It was also your site that made me go out and get the game in the first place. Now that I have the game, I have run into a major brick wall. How do I start to require wealth or any form of financial freedom? It seems that people are only interested in Shards, Singularity Keys, Sturdy Iron Keys, and VERY hard to obtain items. So the bottom line is, how do I get money, without starting with lots of tradable items or a patron with too many M notes on his hands :)

Hi Longshot the brave -
You can get money the old fashioned way: by hunting and selling your loot! As anyone who has ever played with me for any length of time knows, I have what is commonly referred to as "waddle-butt syndrome." I simply can't hunt without checking every single last monster corpse for loot. And I pick up a lot of it! I can't help myself. Junk that other players reject, I'll squirrel away in my pack. Of course it means that I'm constantly overburdened, but I support myself quite easily. Good luck! I'm glad you like the site!

November  2002 - Yanah's Pets

I have four new pet reedsharks: Rusty, a veteran; Spike, an adult; Max, another adult; and Runt, the pup of the pack. :)

--Yanah the Master of Morningthaw

P.S. I met, found and raised them behind the Elder's mansion. I fed them very tasty meat, ME! They can't be found anymore. Saldy, some maniac went and took their lives. I should be happy.

Hi Yanah -
Thanks for writing to tell us about your pets. I'm sorry for your loss. (I think. ;-)

November  2002 - Finding Apartments

As I make my adventure through the Dereth Country side, I find it amazingly beautiful. So much that I have intended to make it my home. Being that I am not from these parts, as much as I would have liked to be, I am finding it extremely difficult to find an apartment which I may call home. Due to my Bachelor status I feel no need for a Villa at this time, nor do I need the extra obligations.

I find that the estate guide has been very helpful to those searching out a Villa or Mansion; however, I have spent over 8 hours searching for an apartment and I have not been able to accomplish this goal.

I was wondering if there may be a way of assisting in this matter by posting an area that would allow the complex owners to advertise openings in their specified complexes, or have I overlooked such a page?

I do find this resource of great assistance as I travel through Dereth and refer to it often.

I do appreciate any assistance or insight you have to offer me.

Thanks you and my the blessings be upon thee.

Hi Zuldar the Just -
I'm sorry to tell you, but there really is no easy way to identify which complexes have available apartments. I think a site like the Vault with their active server boards might be a more appropriate place for people to post openings, rather than my site. Good luck in your search. I hope you are soon able to find a place to call home.

November  2002 - Banderlings

I was wondering.....The new odd looking Banderlings... what's up with that? Like, why would someoone do that to a poor Creature? I mean look at them, the poor things. Anyways that's off subject. My question is just quick: are you going to Ac2?

Kristal of TD

Hi Kristal -
I actually find creatures easier to kill when they're mean and scary looking instead of cute like kitties!

As to your question, yes I do intend to go to AC2. I had actually planned to start playing while I was on vacation, but I forgot to load it onto my laptop before leaving town. Doh!

- Maggie the Jackcat

November  2002 - Derethliving.com

Lol. When are you gonna start working on your AC2 site? You are the only site than I go to for AC1 and will be same for AC2. Please... lol neglect this site for awhile. It is great enough.

dubai of FF

Hi dubai -
I appreciate you thinking this site is great enough, but it can always be greater!! ;-) As I mention above, I'll get back to work on an AC2 site just as soon as I start playing the game in earnest.

November  2002 - New Aluvian Racial Masks

Dear Maggie,

Is it just me, or was Turbine having some, err... lets just say "problems" when they made the new Aluvian mask. The mask has good stats including minor dagger. Now my brother found a Virindi Profatrix Mask and is a Bow/Mage (I think you published one of his letters, his name is Shadow Rising) who wants to think he is good with a dagger. He went out and turned his mask in to Alexander the Deft and received what I think looks like a deformed clown. Now this may just be me but I liked the old Pywll's Guard much more than the new one. The other new racial masks are nice, and I especially like the robot look on the new veil, but the once proud Pwyll's mask is now a joke. I just thought I'd let everyone know that they should see what their getting before they get it. By the way keep up the good work!

Hi Hands of Fire -
It's just you. ;-) Hee hee. Everyone's a critic, I see. I happen to like the masks. Very festive. Looks like something you'd see at Mardi Gras. But consider your warning posted. ;-)

November  2002 - Festival Stone

I was running to Serac Vault and the Festival Stone near Qalaba'r started shooting fireworks !!!! Maybe related to the festivus patch or something?

btw great site. :)

Angra of FF

Hi Angra -
I think the Festival Stones were celebrating AC's anniversary which occurred in early November! Happy Birthday AC!

November  2002 - (sic)

Hi Maggie,

Even though I am not a member of AC, I enjoy reading, now and then, the letters that you publish on your great site. I thought your explanation of the meaning of (sic) was very interesting. However, in the answer to the letter following the (sic) interchange, you wrote, "Hi Agent Black and Rydonpo -
I think your (sic) exactly right. It does look like a hand grabbing a nanner." Oops!

Anyway, your site is great and you're my favorite member of AC. See you in December.

Love,
Your Dad

Hi Dad -
Merry Christmas! It was good to see you. But about the rest of your letter and that whole (sic) thing... I have no idea what you're talking about!! *whistles innocently while quickly editing site*.

Love,
Maggie

November  2002 - What Does [sic] Mean?

Dear Maggie,

I have been a fan of your site for a very long time. I luv it!! I did have a question though.... I've seen many times on your site the letters [sic]... Maybe I'm just dumb, but I have no idea what this means. Couldcha help me out? Thanks!

Orcrist of TD
Level 55 Dagger

Hi Orcrist -
Sic is Latin for "thus" or "so." When it appears in brackets [sic] it indicates that quoted material is being precisely reproduced. Usually it is used when the quoted material has an error in the original. In other words, when you see [sic], it's my way of saying, "No, that's not a typo, Turbine spelled it wrong." or "Yes, I know it should be 'its' but Turbine, once again, is using 'it's' instead." You see them a lot on my site because Turbine didn't specialize their Proofreading skill. ;-)

November  2002 - The Secret of Monkey Island

Hmm...

*looks at map of island*

*blinks*

A monkey grabbing a banana? Isn't this getting a little heavy-handed?? :D :D

Oh, well.. at least they haven't started making jokes about the *secret* of Monkey Island... yet... :D :D

Agent Blank of FF

*****

Look at the new island upside down. Doesn't it look like a hand trying to grab a nanner?

Keep up the good work

Thanks,
Rydonpo of WE

Hi Agent Black and Rydonpo -
I think you're exactly right. It does look like a hand grabbing a nanner. I think the real question is, though, does that hand have an opposable thumb?! ;-)

Ah, sweet mystery. Where is Ulgrim? Where is the Yanshi Jeweler? Will Twitch be thrown into the Volcano? What does Brighteyes, the Tailor, mean when he says, "Give Bobo a Tusker Husk from me."

You give Brighteyes, the Tailor Devastator Tusk.
Brighteyes, the Tailor tells you, "Now bring me the head of Bobo! Never mind that he calls himself Oolutanga. His minions and Tusker allies can't say that name -- it's too long, has too many vowels. Don't you see? They don't have opposable thumbs! We should be the superior race! We should be ruling them! Don't you get it?"
Brighteyes, the Tailor tells you, "Sorry, I lost it there a little."

You give Brighteyes, the Tailor Tusker Title Token.
Brighteyes, the Tailor tells you, "Maybe you should talk to Bobo. Give him a tusker husk for me."

Who is Bobo? Is Bobo even a Tusker? Are the Virindi up to something again? Or... strangest theory of all... could Bobo be... Ulgrim? ;-)

November 2002 - Ketnan's New Scam

Hiya Maggs!

Don't know if anyone else has showed you this, but while I was doing a little holiday shopping for those on my "nice" list down at the Tusker Emporium, I happened to notice something interesting. The Emporium's proprietor is none other that Sultan of Shysters, that King of Conmen....Ketnan! (I guess the heat was on with the rebuilding in Arwic and the Better Business Bureau told him to take a hike!)

Thanks for all the awesome stuff you do!

Ark ibn Guer
Harvestgain

Hi Ark ibn Guer -
First Ulgrim is wandering around, and now Ketnan! I blame
Spertat the Ursuin Hunter. The other vendors appear to be picking up his bad habit of wandering around willy nilly!

November 2002 - Crabbed Note Misinformation

Dear Maggie,

Under the updated information about Harlune, you have posted the following:

"A report from Archui: All the talking to him [Harlune] in the world wouldn't elicit A Crabbed Note. from him, so I decided to re-do the Impious Staff quest. The new version looks *really* nice :) But still no Crabbed Note."

This is a mistake. All the talking in the world WILL get you the Crabbed Note. It just takes more talking than it used to. Must be because he is a snooty Empyrean now.

As always, I love your site and would be lost without it.

The Urchin

Hi Quirky-Urchin -
Thanks for the info. From a misanthrope to a snooty Empyrean. No wonder the only creature that can stand to be around him is a reedshark!

November  2002 - Ned's Hunting Habits

HI Maggie,

I was wondering, Do you think Ned will move out of BSD now that there is a tusker only island?

reguards,

Calladyn of FF

Hi Calladyn -
Well, that's certainly the question that was on many people's minds. Just how did Ned Cleversun react to this Tusker patch, his gift from the Devs? You can find out the answer to the question right here!

November  2002 - AC2 Site

Dear Ms. Jackcat,
I noticed your site hasn't been updated in a very long time. I was just wondering if you still intend on playing AC2 (if you ever did, but since you made a site and all...) and if you would mind notifying the public of your decision.

If you DO play... I must request that you come back to Thistledown, since I know I will miss seeing a real celebrity on my home server (Mithan doesn't count ;).

-Dengar

Hi Dengar -
Hee hee. I haven't even officially launched my AC2 site,
Dereth Living, and already, the demands are pouring in for me to update it!! ;-) Since I'm still receiving way too many questions about the site, I'll mention it again here on the letter page. Yes, I plan to play and do an AC2 site. I stopped working on it because my system kept crashing during Beta (once I finally got in the beta) so I couldn't play. And when I did get on, I had some, er... serious vitae issues. So I put major content updating on hold until retail.

And yes, I will continue to play and to update my AC1 site even after AC2 comes out.

- Maggie the Jackcat

P.S. I promise not to tell Mithan you said that. ;-)
