October  2002 - Giant Pumpkins

Hey, I have information regarding Giant Pumpkins. Well they're in the desert and they will ONLY spawn at scarecrows that attack you, such as Rickety or Suspicious or whatever. It spawns real easy. Thought I would tell you so people would stop paying smalls to find their pumpkins. The only part that takes a LITTLE while is find is the scarecrow itself. Just camp a scarecrow, pick up the pumpkins, and make sure not to kill it, and eventually they will spawn!

October  2002 - Great Pumpkins

These have been selling for Crazy prices in sub, They are a holiday item, I though everyone should know how to get them!

Quite simple, actually. Simply find a living Scarecrow (may be targeted for attack) around the outskirts of most starter, and capital towns, and DO NOT KILL it! Instead, pick up the pumpkins until a GREAT pumpkin spawns. REPEAT as necessary! When you get enough GREAT PUMPKINS, kill the scarecrow and check it for the elusive Pumpkin head mask!

Good Luck, and Happy Halloween!

IB Bad of LC
Level 63 Mage

Hi Surprentis II and IB Bad -
Thanks for sharing the secret. I'm not so sure I agree with you about it only taking a "little" time to find a Scarecrow, though. My aching feet tell a different story. ;-)

October  2002 - Gaerlan Quest Updates

Hello Maggie!

Ragoon from FF here again. I think that there is still a lot of confusion about what exactly triggers what in the Gaerlan quest, especially since the patch. I've done the quest several times, including three times in a row today and I think I have all the triggers down. First the guardian portals. These portals appear apparently either randomly or when one of the elementals that is at the essences dies. I was there when the portal spawned and there were no named monster or anything like that, so I believe the "unique creature" from the letter to the players is just one of the elementals that is specially tagged.

After the guardian golem is killed, the portal to the guardian lair disappears. It reappears when Gaerlan is killed. So if it's not around for a long time, it's probably that someone messed up the quest and it hasn't reset.

The next issue is when the portal for Gaerlan's dungeon (i.e. Icy Demise, etc.) will spawn, other parts are just for people getting flagged to enter. The portal for these dungeons appear when the portals to their related proving grounds open. So after Gaerlan is killed, the portal for the specific level restricted dungeons wont appear until the Asheron's Platinum Golem gets his pyreal nugget and the appropriate proving ground portal spawns.

Important: Mage flag for getting items is broken this month. My mage friend Gaipan Imperiled, Vulned, Drained, War Critted and festered for two Gaerlan spawns and got nothing. On the third run later that day, he used his racial melee skill and got his items.

*So moral of the story is if you start the quest, finish it. Or else everyone else is going to be waiting for a week or more on that shady Guardian Lair portal*

October 2002 - Gaerlan's New Improved Sword

Since the update it seems Gaerlan has gotten a few new imbued special properties on his Sword in the 60-79 level quest. Instead of just 25-50 Human Slayer, it now has Crippling Blow and Armor Rendering on it too! This causes anyone without a shield to get critical for anywhere from 100-225 in one of the three swipes of his triple striking sword!

Most of the time if you're caught without a shield and get a crit on you, you rarely see the end of the quest. Melees with a diamond shield with level 7 banes get slaughtered anywhere from 8-30 seconds, depending how fast you can heal. Our group died 3 times before we finally made a plan to create a wall of melees and have the archers and mages fire away. The only problem is the melees can't attack or he will attack the wall and everyone is dead in 3 min. You also have to take into account the level 6 imperil usually cast on you by the elementals.

Since the update, the portal into the loot room stays closed until Gaerlan is dead.... So no more getting your critical hit and running through to the end. Also, there's a portal back into the library now, and be aware there is a timer on how long you can use this portal. A few of our group members were not able to get their quest items because of this. I only know about the new improvements for the 60-79 section; I'm not sure if they've changed the other swords in the other dungeons. I think they've added a new and better challenge to the quest now. Love your site!

October  2002 - Rolling Ball of Death and Tactics

Well, I just finished the quest using your read-through and I thought it was very good. Here is some information you were missing that helped my group get through it. On the "Rolling Ball of Death" section, you should add that you are safe on the corners of the intersections because it greatly helps people that have tried to just sprint down the hallway towards the door, :D. Also, that buffing your bow/coordination helps kill the door easier.

On the "Gaerlan" section, it would be cool if you added "Tactics," My group easily beat him with 4 melees, 1 archer, and 1 mage. What we did was have 1 melee run down, grab Gaerlan and have him run into the hallway near the entrance. Two melees surround him in his front and his back so he isn't going anywhere. The mage casts Fester Other, Imperil Other, then Vulns. Gaerlan is trapped with an archer gunning him down from the top of the hallway and two melees critically him every time he turns around. Keep the work up on your web-site because I religiously visit it before I go on a quest or long run somewhere :D.

Thanks in advance and I hope you keep the site up :)

October  2002 - Reverence of the Ceremony

In the Reverence of the Ceremony section, you *can* run, and you *can* jump.

This is IMPORTANT since it takes ten times as long walking through and not jumping, lol.

I was in the middle of walking slowly through when a whole group ran right past me. Next time I tried it I ran and jumped and skipped and hopped... and finished so much faster. People should really know this.

October  2002 - Golems in the Reverence of the Ceremony

I'm on the Gaerlan Quest. One thing you may want to mention, in the final walk, the silent room (reverence), there are golems in the FINAL room. For the 60-79 they were acidic coral golems and an acidic diamond golem.

They DO attack you, but you CANNOT attack back until you are in the final room with chests and the lever. So make sure you're buffed. I made it through, luckily. Now we're waiting at the Gaerlan spot for more people.

October  2002 - Corrections on Gaerlan's Citadel Quest

I love your write-ups. Most of the time you've got it so right it's amazing.

However the (admittedly confusing) Citadel quest write-up needs some corrections:

- The mountain route is a bug. You won't be able to do that next month. Waiting for the Guardian portals in Eastham will be the only way.

- You can ID the door you're trying to kill. It doesn't regen because of that.

- Trail#4 -- Reverence of the Ceremony
(First, shouldn't that read "trial" not "trail"?)
You can run down the stairs. Do not speak or SPELLCAST; I'm not sure about battle mode. We had the most success when we walked in the actual ceremony chamber. If you speak/spellcast in THERE, nasty golems spawn and try to kill you. Sending tells seems to be okay.

- You must complete the Proving Ground trials within 3 hours of giving the nugget to the golem, or you'll no longer be flagged for the Proving Ground portals.

- You can log off in the landing zone in the last dungeon, where you fight Gaerlan.

- You can get the imbued seal and portal gem, and hold onto them for days before using them. If you're having trouble getting a large enough group for your Gaerlan assault together, it's a good idea to do that. If nothing else, you can get another seal and gem after 3 hours (3 hours after picking up the seal pieces, that is), so when you pick things up in a few days you're no WORSE off than trying to kill Gaerlan and failing.

- I recommend you emphasize in the last section (the Kill Gaerlan part) that you make sure you have at least one mage with you, and that this mage is capable of casting Frailty, Imperil, AND slash vuln. We went with someone who could only cast the latter two, and 8 of us couldn't beat on Gaerlan hard enough to reduce his health under 90% without Frailty reducing his regen rate.

Thanks, and keep up the great work! I hope things at your *paying* job let up so you can get back to Dereth!

Thanks to everyone who sent in information on the updates to the Gaerlan's quest. I'll try to get the write-up revised soon!! In the meantime, I'm sure people will appreciate all the tips above!

October  2002 - Bats Are Not Rodents

Just to clarify a common misconception:
http://library.thinkquest.org/11922/mammals/bats.htm

Classification
* Kingdom: Animalia
* Phylum: Chordata
* Class: Mammalia
* Order: Chiroptera
* Family: Pteropodidae

Hi Tom -
I actually *did* know that. I'm rather fond of bats. But I bet there's a lot of people out there who didn't, so thanks for the clarification.

October  2002 - Thank You and a Request

Hi Maggie -
I just wanted to drop you a line and tell you how much your web page has helped me in the game. I'm a long time gamer and have played a lot of games in my time, but I have never seen a page set up by anyone that is as nice as yours.

As I look at your page, I see hours and hours of work done by you to help players like me and I would like to thank you so very much for the time and hard work you have put into it. You rock on Maggie and I wish only the best of all things for you, in and out of the game.

I would like to ask something. If you don't want to reply, that's fine, but it's something I need to know. When I made my character, I gave her the name of Nadine The Tramp thinking it was a very cute name, and I could if I liked have a lot of fun being the tramp. BUT it seem that all I am is a outlet for some VERY rude players to shout names at. And when I say names, I think you know what I'm saying. This hurts me a lot and no way I will re-roll my character. I enjoy her way too much, except for the name calling.

What I want to know is do you know of a plug-in that I can set-up, so if my character hears a name or words I don't like, it will auto put them on my list of player I don't want to talk to? I have been looking, but have yet to find anything like that so far. Fun and good times is what I want and I'm a slow typer so by the time I have added them to the list, the damage has been done=(

I'm sorry that my letter started so nice, but ended so bad=( your're #1 in my book Maggie. Keep on rocking ;o)

Nadine The Tramp of SC

Hi Nadine The Tramp -
Thanks very much for your nice letter. I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you've had in-game. I'm not sure if Spam Spanker does exactly what you're looking for, but I know you can customize a list of bad words to filter. I'm not a Decal user myself, but my vassal really likes this one. And, of course, if someone's breaking the CoC, you can always go through official channels. No one should have to listen to abusive language in-game. Good luck!

October 2002 - Oh My Goodness!

Oh my goodness, Maggie! Your website has been soooo helpful, and pretty darn funny too. It inspired me to make a fletching/ alchemy/ cooking mule, more for fun really than anything else. But there's no way I could have done it with out you. Well, I could have done it, but he wouldn't have been able to MAKE anything without your help. I am having so much fun playing this game and it's in large part thanks to you.

Cheers!

Hi James Negresh
I love the Ned Cleversun smacks his head pic too!! It's my very favorite and it's soooo old. We were both really low levels (under 10) and were just learning how to do emotes. It still cracks me up every time I look at it! Glad you like the site. :)

October  2002 - Hollow Weapons

About the following:
"Poor Ganthalas had industriously mined 22 Chunks of the low grade ore in the Lugian Mines (73.9S x 39.0E) before realizing three things: it was very heavy; it was no-drop; you could only use one chunk per person"

Couldn't you just give it to a town crier like most other no-drop stuff? And if so, you might wanna mention it on the page (and possibly to poor Ganthalas, if they didn't delete the char).

kDB of DT

Hi kDB -
That quest write-up was written ages ago, when people were just learning that the Town Criers could act as a garbage receptacle. You're right that I should probably update it. Um... it's on the list! ;-)

October  2002 - Loot

Hi Maggie,

Let me, first off, let you know how wonderful your site is. I, personally, feel it is the best AC1 site on the net. It has all the information I need with out all the extraneous cr.. um.. er.. information that all the other sites have. I have been going to your site since it started and have never been disappointed.

I have a mission for you, should you choose to accept it (ignore the music in the background). Something has long been needed and, with the revamping of the loot system, is even more needed now. No-one has ever explored the loot system to any extent and published the information. What's the highest defense mod for a Katar? What's the highest possible damage for a dagger? Can you get strength VI on Sols or only coordination and quickness? What's the highest AC for a Covenant Breastplate? What is the damage range for a 270 bow? I am sure you see what I mean. I have been playing since release and I can't answer many of these questions. When I pick up a piece of loot, it may look good at a glance, but without benchmarks to go by, I don't really know. It may be the best sword ever dropped or just something destined for the Ust.

I know that this would be a daunting project, but with the number of your readers and the wealth of information sources you can draw upon, I would think this type of thing would be easier for you then most.

Once again thank you for your ongoing efforts in AC. People like you make the lives of people like me much easier.

Miss Fortune of FF
Level 69 Dagger

P.S. I love the new format for your AC2 site. Will you be converting the AC1 site to the new format?

Hi Miss Fortune -
Actually, that's a project I'd love to work on. I had a really nice
Max Weapon Damage Table that I worked on for quite a while, and updated it once with game changes, but sadly, the whole thing's way outdated yet again!! I always have to balance updating the site against the free time I have. I wish I had skipped updating the table the last time, because now all that work seems wasted. So, yes, I'd like to work on a project like this again, but I want to wait a bit to see how all the recent changes shake out. If the loot table seems to have settled down after the next update, I'll start the call for info in earnest.

About your P.S. no, I plan to keep the AC1 format as it is. It'd be way too much work to make those sorts of changes at this stage. Besides, I still like it!

October 2002 - Haunted House Quest

It says in your walkthrough that you have to hit the Sarcophagus till you see the message: You feel something without voice scream in your mind in utter rage. It chills you to the bone as it fades away.

I, on the other hand, only:

1. Crit hit it
2. got the message: The black sarcophagus pulses with a black light.

That is all I did to it! and got the couch also...

October  2002 - Frest Quest

Hi, I just want to clarify one issue about this quest. The fire staff is NOT needed unless you just want it as a quest memento. I just did the quest and couldn't find the zombie that drops the staff so I went to the sarcophagus and whacked it with my regular AR staff. I made sure I got a critical then went back to Frest and talked to him. He thanked me and gave me the couch and the xp. :) Love your site!

October  2002 - Will Maggie Die When AC2 Launches?

Hi Maggie,

Great site you have! I guess your site is one the reasons why I like playing AC1 so much. I am a bit worried though about the future.... Is Maggie going to die when AC2 launches? In other words, will your great site still be updated with AC1 news in the future?

Dark Archer Jaosun of FF
Level 38 Archer

Hi Dark Archer Jaosun -
I've stated this several times, but it doesn't hurt to repeat it. No, my AC1 site will not die when AC2 launches. I had to give up on the AC2 beta and my new AC2 site for a while because of system crashes and uncontrollable vitae, but I intend to keep both the AC1 site and the new AC2 site running when AC2 hits the shelves.

- Maggie the Jackcat

October  2002 - Should I Go To AC2?

Maggie,
I
need a suggestion from you, All my friends and half the clan is going to AC2.What should I do? I was invited to AC2, so I played, but I don't like it that much. I like AC1 better. What should I do? I don't wanna be the only one left in AC1 with no friends or anything.

Should I got to AC2 with my friends? Or stay where I feel happier and more comfortable?

Kristal of TD
Level 39, Soldier Slaughterer

Hi Kristal -
That's a question many are struggling with right now, indeed! First of all, judging AC2 in its beta state may be premature. As AC has done, I'm sure the game will be continually evolving for the better. You might decide you want to give it a try after it hits the shelves.

Even if you do decide to stay with AC1 after many of your friends move on, you won't be alone. Many people won't have a computer that can handle AC2, or they'll prefer the game style of AC1. If your clan breaks down, I'm sure you'll be able to find a home in another allegiance and make new friends.

It's a tough choice, and one I decided not to make! ;-) I'm just going to play both.

- Maggie the Jackcat

October  2002 - Platinum Golem Saying You Missed

I tried and failed to land a spell on this golem, and it said the following.

Give me some sugar, baby.

I've tried using this saying on many women in-game, alas to no avail I just get a slap in the face.

Ronin Gibronin of TD

Hi Ronin Gibronin -
Hmm. What a dilemma. It's probably all in the delivery. Maybe if you tried dropping shards and high level loot you'd have more success with the ladies. Er... just kidding! ;-)
