TIP FOR LIFE MAGES -- COMBINING VULNS &
IMPERILS
Here is a life magic monster
fighting strategy for applying vulnerability spells: when operating at the
edge of your abilities -- perhaps because of debuffs, or vitae, or because a
particular monster is very resistant -- try combining a standard debuff such
as blade vulnerability or piercing or bludgeoning vulnerability with an
Imperil spell. The two types of spell can be used together, and they do not
duplicate one another. So the effects are cumulative. A level 4 bludgeon
vuln, plus a level 4 Imperil, for example, are each easier to cast than a
single level 5 spell.
The best part is that the two spells together will almost always have a
greater effect than a single level 5 spell.
NOTE 1: The vuln
spell (bludgeon, blade, piercing, acid, fire, cold, electrical) should be
selected to match the weakness of a particular monster. For example, shadows
are generally extra-susceptible to slashing (blade) and fire attacks. The
vulnerability selected should also match the weapon you (or your hunting
partners) are going to use, obviously. If you are a sword fighter, use blade
vulnerability, and so forth, regardless of the special weakness of
the monster. Imperils will work equally well for any type of monster or
weapon.
NOTE 2: this technique works
only with Imperil (any level) and a vulnerability spell. Two vulnerability
spells will NOT combine in this way.
BTW, the "why" of this
is a bit interesting. Imperil reduces the armor level of a monster. And
armor levels can actually be brought below zero. A vulnerability spell
increases the amount of damage done by a particular type of attack,
presuming the attack is not resisted partly or entirely by armor or avoided
by melee defense or missile defense skill.
