Town Crier tells you, "Do you like the
color of my robe? I dyed it myself, using some herbs I found growing in
the forest. I don't think I'll be able to use that pot to make soup again,
though..."
Dye Plants
History
Dye plants were introduced
during the Twilight's Gleaming
event. Originally, only three seasonal plants were found
on the landscape, Hennacine, Berimphur and Verdalim. The seasons changed during The Child of
Daralet event and Argenroy, Minalim and Lapyan plants became available
instead.
During the
Lost in
the New Horizon event, Terese the Herbalist appeared
in the
Samp Gardens outside of Yanshi (22.5S, 45.8E). In return for the Little
Green Seeds found in the droppings of Shreth and Rampager or Assailer
Tuskers, (yucky!) she'll give you dye plants in return. The Tusker Seeds are
particularly desirable, as they yield the black dye plant Thananim. In
addition to the seeds from Terese, two new colors of dye plants appeared:
Renalim, a deep purple dye plant found on the Obsidian Plains, and Colban, a
royal blue plant found on Aerlinthe.
In the
Betrayal
event, Verdalim, Berimphur, Verdalim, Argenory, Minalim, and Lapyan again became
available on the landscape. Currently, all dye plants are growing in Dereth
(with the exception of Thananim which is only obtainable through Terese).

Dye Plant Locations & Little Green
Seeds for details.
Overview
Dyeing requires both the
Alchemy and
Cooking
trade skills. All steps have a skill check (the skill at
which you have a 50% chance of success). Use Alchemy to crush a plant with a
mortar
and pestle, then apply
Neutral
Balm to create a Vial of Dye. Using the Cooking skill, cook the Vial in
a Cooking Pot. It's now ready to apply. The Cooking skill is also required
for applying the dye to armor, clothing or flags.

Applying
Dyes
Dyes can be used on clothing, armor,
flags and selected quest or crafted items. A skilled cook is required for
success. If you fail, you lose the dye pot and will damage your item.
All failed attempts produce discoloration and armor
degradation. A critical failure damages your armor even more severely.
From
The
Slumbering Giant event:
In simplifying the code used to dye items,
it became nearly impossible to have failed dyeing interactions result in
pink or orange items. These failures have been restored. Now every time a
dyeing interaction fails, the item will be dyed pink or orange.

Frequently Asked Questions
Discoloration produces either
a hot pink or a neon orange color. Clothing (including
leather Amuli Leggings) will turn pink and Armor (includes Amuli Coats)
will turn orange.
Yes, you can attempt to dye a
piece of armor a 2nd time for the correct color. However, any damage to
the AL will be permanent.
No. The spells will remain
unchanged. Only color and AL is affected by failing.
An Amuli Coat usually comes in
two to three colors on the different parts: the base color and the shoulder
and the chest. When you dye an Amuli coat, the shoulders
and collar retain the original
color. When you dye Amuli Leggings, the belt and cuff will retain the
original color.
When you dye Celdon Armor, the
veins retain their original color.
For a Koujia Breastplate, the
secondary color remains unchanged. This is usually the patterned part to
the side of the chest area. For Koujia Leggings the squares on the knees
and the patterned area of the lower leg remain unchanged. For sleeves, the
backs remain unchanged.
For Plate, Yoroi, Scale and
Chain, the only parts that retain the original color are the belt on a
Hauberk, Cuirass or Girth.
The base
leather becomes dyed and the metal studs retain their original attributes.
Yes, during
the
Festivus patch, Covenant became dyeable.
No.
The difficulty for armor and clothing is always the
same: 230. The type of material or the type of armor doesn't matter. The
only exception is Wedding Raiment which is easier to dye than normal
clothing or armor and has a difficulty of 100. Dyeing clothing, however,
has less risk than dyeing armor, since you don't have to concern yourself
with damaging your AL. If you fail, you can simply try again!
Will the
curve on skill checks, you can never be guaranteed 100% success. That
said, the magic number at which you'll have a
99% rate of success is a Cooking Skill of 380.
For all
skill checks you can use the following numbers:
+100 skill = 95% success
+150 skill = 99% success
Yes!
The
Festivus patch also brought new dye tech. Certain quest and crafted
items gained the ability to be dyed. Currently, you can dye
Bunny
Slippers,
Mattekar Coats,
Olthoi
Helms, and
Holiday
Hats. Other quest and crafted armor or clothing items are unable to
be dyed at this time.
Note:
Shadow Armor has its own special dye. See the
Persuasion event for details.
Other Uses

Ketnan tells you, "Why yes,
I do have those Hoory Mattekar Robes I mentioned last month. These are
quality items, far better than the original. I can promise you no Mattekars
were killed to bring you this fine, only slightly offwhite robe. All of your
friends will be amazed at how stylish you look. And this can be yours for
just a sample of a dye plant! What a steal! Not to mention I will throw in a
bludgeoning sword for free!"
