Basic Tinkering

Town Crier tells you, "Why, I am having such a great time utilizing my new Tinkering Skills, I was almost late for work today!"

Tinkering was introduced during the Repercussions event as a replacement for appraisal skills. Appraisal skill points and any spent experience were refunded and players had the option to train one of the new skills (Gharu'ndim players automatically trained in Item Tinkering to replace the racial default Item Appraisal skill). Note: Tinkering skills cannot be specialized.

There are four types of Tinkering Skills:

--Item Tinkering - 2 skill pts to train
(Focus + Coordination  / 2)

--Armor Tinkering - 4 skill pts to train
(Focus + Endurance  / 2)

-- Weapon Tinkering - 4 skill pts to train
(Focus + Strength  / 2)

--Magic Item Tinkering - 4 skill pts to train
(Focus)

In addition to the four types of Tinkering, there are also a few basic tinkering skills which any player can use.

What does Tinkering Do? Tinkering adds certain effects to items. You can reduce the value of your favorite hauberk to make it less likely to drop on death. You can increase the armor level of your Sword Mastery Gauntlets! You can improve the speed of your favorite weapon. You can add spells, change a racial requirements and so much more! The sections for each Tinkering skill will explain these effects in detail.

In order to tinker, you first need to collect salvage, then apply the salvage to an item.

Salvage is created by using an Ust, a tool that can be purchased in the Nexus and Starter towns, on a loot generated item. (Visit the Lockpicks page in the Shopping Bargains section for Ust vendor locations.)

You can also purchase the Tinkering Text at various location for additional information.

During the All That They Survey event, all players were awarded a basic Salvaging Skill. Those with a Heritage Tinkering Skill (given when the Appraisal Skills automatically assigned at character creation were replaced) were also now able to untrain their Tinkering Skills!

You have been granted the opportunity to forget what you know about item tinkering in the form of a gem of forgetfulness.
You have become knowledgeable in the methods of Salvaging.
Your base Salvaging skill is now 5!

When you salvage an item, you extract its base qualities. The two qualities you will be looking for are the material type and the workmanship. Each type of material (bronze, silk, leather, sapphire, marble, etc.) adds a specific tinkered effect. The workmanship determines the quality of your salvage and plays a part in the success of your tinkering attempt. The higher the workmanship of your salvage, the higher your chances of success! Your Salvaging Skill also plays a part in how successful your salvaging attempt will be.

To see how the Salvage Skill affects how much you can salvage from items of various workmanship, visit this table by Tlosk of HG! (248 is the max salvage skill when buffed. The table extrapolates data up to 281 in case the skill may eventually be specialized or majors are added.)

Workmanship comes in the following qualities:

Workmanship

Quality

No Workmanship 0-1
Well-Crafted 2
Finely Crafted 3
Exquisitely Crafted 4
Magnificently Crafted 5
Nearly Flawless 6
Flawless 7
Utterly Flawless 8
Incomparable 9
Priceless  10

To salvage, double-click your Ust and the salvage panel will open. Place the loot you want to salvage in the window (you can put more than one item in the window at a time, but it must be of the same material type), then click the salvage button. A sack of the salvage will appear in your main pack. The number of units of salvage you receive depends on the workmanship of the items and on your salvaging skill, but the burden of your bags will always be 100. It's a great way to carry loot from the field without worrying about becoming overburdened! Vendors are happy to purchase the salvage from you if you choose not to apply it an item.

Note: Some players claim that salvaging each item separately instead of all at once yields a higher number of units.

In order to apply salvage, you will need to have 100 units, or a full sack. You can combine salvage of the same type together until you reach 100 units, but be aware that combining lower quality salvage will reduce the overall quality of your bag. If you combine two bags of salvage that total over 100 units, the excess will be lost.

You must be trained in one of the tinkering skills to enhance an item. Double-click on the salvage, then use it on the item you want to enhance. The higher the tinkering skill, the higher the chances of success. Other factors of success are the quality of the salvage (higher is better), the type of salvage you are applying (some materials are more difficult to apply than others), the workmanship of the item you are tinkering (a lower workmanship on the item will give you better success) and the number of times the item has been tinkered already. You can only tinker an item a total of 10 times. Each attempt at enhancement becomes increasingly difficult to succeed. If the tinkering attempt fails, your item will be destroyed! The salvage will be used whether the attempt succeeds or fails.

During the Across the Vast Divide event, a new feature to tinkering was added. When you try to apply salvage, a screen pops up informing you of your chances of success! Salvage was also added as a quest reward during the On Bended Knee event. Complete the Burun Kings quest for a chance to receive a bag of salvage with Workmanship 10!

Experienced tinkers will try to find items with workmanship of 3 or less for the maximum number of enhancements. Items with workmanship around 4-5 can usually be tinkered 7-8 times. Ten tinkers can be done if the skill of the tinker is very high. If the workmanship is higher than 6, the skill checks become increasingly difficult and more risky.

Most tinkers choose to hold a Focusing Stone when attempting to enhance an item.

Note: To prevent player dishonesty, a local message is broadcast with the tinkering result.
