Where Are They Now?

Gheres Reficul - Level 65

Gheres Reficul has been one of my most loyal friends and faithful contributors since forever! Over the years, we've been on many adventures together. I fought my first ML tusker with Gheres, and died to my first ML Zefir with him as well. He's pulled me out of the acid pit, and helped me get my Shadow Armor! If there's a new quest to be done, I can always count on Gheres!

I've been promising to update Gheres Reficul's page since October 2001, which is the first time we met to take a few updated pictures! At the time Gheres Reficul was level 56, and (very rare indeed) totally magic free! No Life Magic, no Item Magic, no Creature Magic, no War Magic. He has, without a doubt, the strongest legs in Dereth!

He sent me a picture of an adventure he had: One Lifestone at a Time! "I ran from Glenden Wood to Teth (That was all I had planned at first)," he wrote. "Then I ran to the floating advocate tower. I dubbed it the 'One Lifestone at a Time' Tour. I brought up AC Explorer and just ran to lifestone after lifestone.Hehehe I included a pic of it..."

I asked him to give me a run down of his characters for the page. Gheres Reficul has played for 2mo 29d 5h 3m 29s. He's died 233 times. He has 2 other characters: "One is an alchy/fletch that I have recently been getting twinked (so he can make the trade elixirs.. they rule). And yes, Cook of Doom, he's at the Lin Citadel at the moment.. friend buffed him with VIIs and I logged him there. He's level 21... and has a SOCS, GSA legs, GSC top, Olthoi helm (old school), a Sickle, and is trained in cooking.. hehe. Specilized in axe, cause one day he'll have the sleeves of inexhaustability."

Gheres Reficul is specialized in Lore and Sword, trained in Appraise Magic Item, Crossbow, Healing, Leadership, Lockpick, Melee Defense, and Missile Defense. The Appraise Magic Item was originally a role play choice, but he says it does come in handy sometimes.

He had another char, a failed dagger guy (before bandits) with a strength of 73. Base. Not a very good mule, he said!

He adds, "And then I had created a war mage (speced in mana C) That I never got around to actually playing. She was intended to be a mule/warmage/portal whore... but.. she's still level 1 and in Rithwic. Cook of Doom is the only viable playable other char of mine.. but I stick to Gheres really. He's just too much fun. A gimp to the end. Proving every lil claim that 'Dude it's impossible' wrong."

Gheres Reficul says, "Cause that's why gheres is the way he is. He was originally created to be an RP character. He would have been an Amnesiac from Ispar that couldn't cast magic... he understood it (cause he's specialized in lore) but couldn't cast it. Had a really nice SL plotted out for him... but RP here died. So then my friends told me to re-roll cause there's no way he could make it without item. That it'd be Impossible. And me being pigheaded I guess said, No... I'll prove that wrong. And I have, Item magic is the greatest luxury in this game. But it is totally unnecessary."

Maggie the Jackcat is kind of spoiled. I like my luxuries! But every time I do a quest with Gheres, I get to see some pretty countryside, that's for sure! ;-)

Next we concentrated on some posing, because it's all about the fashion, don't you know. Like a lot of us strong melees, Gheres carries quite an array of un-droppable weapons: 1 Ravenous, 1 Hollow, 2 Atlans, 3 bandits (Pierce, Fire, Frost), 1 SOLL, 1 SOLH in the making, 1 Composite Xbow, 1 Caulnalain Xbow. And the Shendolain Shield. On the left he's posing in some classic Shadow Armor (Smoldering Stoned) with a Crystal Sword and Shendolain Shield, and posing with a Ravenous Sword and a Virindi Mask (Frost Stoned classic GSC) on the right. Below he poses in the Virindi Shroud, with the Obsidian Director's Mask and a Bandit Rapier.

Gheres then introduced me to some of his little friends:
Gheres Reficul says, "Vance the Virindi"
Gheres Reficul says, "Louis the Lugian"
Gheres Reficul says, "Terrance the Tusker"
Gheres Reficul says, "And Mooby The Cow"
You say, "awwwww"
Gheres Reficul says, "Used to have a mosswart but I was bored and gambled him... hahaha"
You say, "ha. I love these things!"
Gheres Reficul says, "I only got a Pyreal pea"
You say, "haha"
You say, "Poor little mossy!"
Gheres Reficul says, "He was upsetting the tusker though"
Gheres Reficul says, "So he deserved it"
You say, "the dancing?"
Gheres Reficul says, "Yeah"
Gheres Reficul says, "The dancing made the tusker scared"
You say, "haha"
Gheres Reficul says, "I wish you could hold them in your hand"

Gheres Reficul typically hunts with some friends around Teth or in the South Direlands: Zalgaddas, Aiko, Roxy, Regina Farr, Tayway and Kurse; battling Diamond Lords so Gheres can get his shield. He also has a new patron since the last time he was featured on the Runway. One day he logged in and found all his characters dissolved from his previous patron. He was pretty bummed (since he was only level 22 at the time), but then Twink me (previously Desiree'), a friend of his, took him hunting to help cheer him up.

Gheres Reficul says, "Then one day.. I was like 10K from 25 and she said 'hey, you wanna do SOLL?' Cause at the time it was a big quest yanno? She and I desperately wanted to go on it. I told her I still needed the XP and she said okay to hurry up and level.. haha. I did that.. and we ran to Stonehold.... Got the last key... hit the port... ran to SOLL..... in the course we ran into a cool guy named Sarpedon (who is no longer playing). We got the sword... and it was just cool. I had so much fun... and she continued to do stuff with me so I figured she'd be the best and I swore to her. She's totally insane. Will go anywhere, do anything. Her death count is near 2000 or so I believe."

I asked him to please not let Ned Cleversun hear that! ;-)

Gheres has been busy since we met to take those pics several months ago! We used to run neck and neck level-wise, but he's zoomed ahead. When he got his Villa, he invited me up to take a look at it, and so he could show off his Sword of Lost Hope and his Diamond Shield.

I got the grand tour! Gheres has a fountain and a festival light in his back yard! What a great place to relax. And he's finally got a place to show off his pack toy collection. A Golden Gromnie stands guard in one room, and a Tusker is stationed in another. He's got a beautiful scenic view from his bedroom window. I even got a tour of the basement dungeon where he held a terrifying two-headed creature captive!

I made the mistake of telling my vassal all about Gheres's Villa. When Ned Cleversun ran into him at the Tired Mage, he made quite the scene, wondering aloud how some level 60 something had a villa when he, a powerful level 70 something, only had a cottage! He was, however, unable to convince Gheres to trade. ;-)

Becomming quite surly, and exhibiting an unseemly case of Villa envy, Ned Cleverun sneered, "but it's not a *real* dungeon, now is it?"

Gheres Reficul quickly retorted, "It is if the girls want it to be!"

And who says role-playing is dead? ;-)
