One of the first
quests in the Dereth, the Sword of Lost Light used to be one of the most
coveted items in all the land. Not only does this famous sword of legend have
desirable magical properties, but it also looks fabulously cool! The quest was
updated during
Into the
Darkness and the sword is now more powerful than ever!
To acquire the
sword you must first follow a series of rumors to find 7 keys.
These keys open the doors in
the Sword's final resting place, a dangerous Hall in the dreaded Direlands.
The Halls of Lost Light were so named by Alatar Locke, a famous Dereth
explorer who happened upon this sad, forgotten place and first discovered the
sword. The first 6 keys can be found in newbie dungeons. The 7th is found in the more challenging Carved Cave.
Finally, the sword itself is carried by an undead, deep with the Halls of Lost Light.
As Alatar Locke traveled the lands, he told wondrous tales of his adventures and
discoveries. Iquba was one such person who heard tell of this fabled sword, of a
distant cave, and a dungeon full of locked doors. As tales told in taverns often
do, the rumors of this sword spread throughout the land. Notes scattered
throughout Dereth, both on the ground and for sale by shopkeepers and barkeeps,
will guide you to the keys.
The Rumors
Use the links below to read the various rumors for this quest. The location
for each rumor is also included. A good place to begin is the Rithwic Peddler at
9.9N, 58.5E. A note spawns near him on the ground. If you wait for the note to
respawn, you can pick up an entire handful of rumors to get you on your way.
Notes also spawn inside a Sho Tower near Yanshi at 8.7S, 46.5E
and next to an Empty Lifestone Bracket in Samsur at 2.7S, 20.4E. You
can also purchase Directions to the Rithwic Crypt from the barkeep which leads
you straight to the menhir ring surrounding the dungeon entrance.

speak to Iquba in Qalab'ar to get you started. (See also the
Tibri's Spear
quest).
Iquba al-Julmud the Barkeeper tells you, "Welcome! What's your pleasure today?
How about a fried egg? Or maybe directions to a mysterious sword?"

The Worn Odd Key is found
on a Desert Rat in the Rithwic Crypt.
Inside the dungeon you'll find Mire Wasps,
Hunter
Shreths, and
Desert
Rats. The rat
is in the lower level. To reach it, you can go either right or left from the
entrance. If you go right, look for the 3rd door on your left and take it down
to the lower level.At the bottom of the ramp, make a left. Make another left into the room with the
rat. From Rithwic, take the portal to Shoushi at 11.0N, 59.3E.
Note: The portal
to the Crypt is in a Stone Menhir ring. When you take the surface portal out of
the dungeon, you'll be standing in the center of the ring. Energy from the
circle can restore your mana!
You feel a great swell of power rise from the ground
beneath you, restoring 2 points of your mana.
Shoushi Grotto

This key can be obtained from a Drudge Slave (L14) in the Throne Room of the
Shoushi Grotto. You'll also encounter
Drudge Slaves L12 &
L14, Hunter
Shreth and Swamp
Rats. From the entrance go
straight through the door and down the ramp into the large room. Take the west
passage to the left and hug the left wall until you find the ramp down. At the
bottom of the ramp, go left again through the door to the big open room. Take
the passage at the south end and continue until you hit wall. Turn left heading
west passing all the side corridors until you hit the ramps up. The throne room
is at the top of the ramp. The key spawns on a Drudge Slave (L14). (The Slave
doesn't spawn as rapidly as the other drudges so you may have to wait through a
few spawns to get your key. From Shoushi, take the portal to Yanshi at 35.0S,
74.4E.
Yanshi Tunnels

The Worn Plain Key
is found on a Drudge Slave (L14) in the Yanshi Tunnels.
This dungeon is simple to navigate. You'll encounter
Drudge Slaves
both L12 and L14. Hug the left all the way from the entrance to a room with two
tables (the 2nd large room with furniture). If you have lockpick, you can go right
from the entrance and pick open the door (resistance 122) directly into the
room with the key drudge. This dungeon also contains a chest with one of
Jhong Mi's
Writings. (See the
Yanshi Starter
Quests.) From Yanshi, take the portal to Yaraq at 12.1S, 46.3E.
Yaraq Tunnels

The Worn Strange Key is found on a Drudge Slave
(L14)in the Yaraq Tunnels. This dungeon is a little
more complex than some of the other key dungeons. You'll encounter Drudge Slaves
L12 & L14 and Desert Rats.
From the entrance go straight through the door and follow the corridor around
bypassing any side routes until you reach another door. On the other side is a
large open room. Take the door on the south wall and go through the small rooms
to the ramp on the west wall.
Once down the
ramp you'll have to go through a series of small rooms to reach the ramp down to
the next lower level. Just keep following the passage and you won't get lost. If
you have lockpick, you can skip this section and pick the lock immediately at
the bottom of the first ramp (resistance 40). The ramp down will be to your
left.
You'll now be at
a "T". Turn right through the grated door, then right again through another
grated door. At the end of this passage is a 5 way intersection. Take the
passage 2nd on your left and follow the corridor to the Drudge Slave.
From Yaraq, take the portal
to Samsur at 23.0S, 0.2W.
Samsur's
Dungeon Manor - 1.9S, 19.8E

This key is found on a Drudge Slave
(L14) in Samsur's Dungeon Manor.
You'll encounter
Drudge
Slaves L12 & L14 and Desert Rats. From the entrance take the first
right. At the split go left then follow the passage straight ahead until you
reach the ramp going down. From here, just hug the left wall until you reach the
final room. Kill the Drudges and retrieve the key off a Slave. This dungeon is
also inhabited by Grawalda the Peddler who sells
Stamina Elixirs,
Peerless Heals, and Peerless Lockpicks. From Samsur,
take the portal to Holtburg at 1.6S, 18.4E.
Holtburg
Dungeon - 43.6N, 33.0E

The Worn Small Key
is found on a Swamp Rat in the Holtburg Dungeon.
The creatures inside this dungeon may be a little more challenging that the
other key dungeons. You'll encounter
Drudge Slaves L12 and
L14, a Sandy and a Spikey
Armoredillo, a Jade
Gromnie and Swamp
Rats. From the entrance hug the left wall
until you reach the large library room. Go down the short ramp on the east wall
and make your first right. The Worn Small Key is on one of the Swamp Rats behind
the door.
Carved Cave - 7.4N, 0.6E
Key: A Silvery Mysterious Key

The final key, A
Mysterious Silvery Key, is found in the Carved Cave near Al-Jalima (to
reach Al-Jalima, you can take the portal from Arwic at 33.6N, 57.1E).
Inside you'll be fighting Silver
Rats; Wild and
Brutish
Monouga; a few
Skeleton
Lords and Wraiths;
Ash Gromnies; and
Shadows and Shadow Children in the final room.
To make your way down, you'll first need to find two keys.
From the
entrance take the east passage down and go straight into the large open
area. A door
to your left opens into a room full of Silver Rats. You'll find the
Carved Key inside a chest.
Head back to the entrance room and take the west passage this time. Use
the key on the locked door. Make a right and at
the ledge, jump down to the level below and turn right heading north. The
chest holding the Small Carved Key is in a small room to the right.
Note:
if you go back to the area you jumped down into and jump one more level
down into the Ash Gromnie area, you can pick up 250 Enchanted Fire Arrows
from a chest in the corner (just a souvenir, no quest use).
From
the 2nd key room go south and take the ramp on the east wall back to the
entry room. To
reach the final Shadow room, you'll again take the west passage down. Use
your first key on the locked door and take the ramp up. Follow the passage
until you reach the ledge. Jump down to the next level and take the ramp
up to the west. At the top of the ramp use the 2nd key to open the door
and you'll find yourself on another ledge near the exit portal. Do a shift
jump across (hold the shift key down while you jump) to jump across the
landing kitty corner from you, then follow the corridor down into the
final Shadow Room. A Silvery Mysterious Key is in the chest. The final
room contains three portals, one to the Mid Direlands (exiting at
88.3S, 64.5W next to the Aerlinthe D Note lifestone), one to Qalab'ar, and
another directly to the Halls of Lost Light.

Inside the Halls of Lost
Light you'll be fighting various
undead: Zombies, Liches, a Lich Lord, a Granite Golem, and the Guardian of the Lost Light,
a level 61 Undead. A Letter from Alatar Locke is lying on the ground at
the entrance.

The dungeon is easy to navigate. From the entrance take
either passage and just keep to the left the whole way through, or keep to
the right. You'll go through a series of doors that must be opened with
the keys you are carrying. After opening 2 doors, you'll jump down a level
and repeat the process. Just try each key on the door as you come to them. Don't worry! You won't lose your keys by trying them on the wrong door. Each key
has three uses, so if you die while inside the Halls, you will still have a chance to recover your corpse.
The Guardian is behind the only wooden door in the lowest level.
Use A Silvery Mysterious Key to open the final door.
It's accompanied by a few Liches, a Lich Lord and a Granite Golem. The Guardian
of the Lost Light carries the Sword of Lost Light and the Superior Shied. Remember that the Sword of Lost Light cannot be given away, so make sure the right person loots the corpse of the Guardian!
(Both the sword and shield may be given.)
The
Sword of Lost Light can be upgraded by using
Fire
Infusions on it. Adding the Blood of the Hopeslayer will convert the
sword in the
Sword of
Lost Hope. The Superior Shield may be dyed. There is a 7 day timer on
this quest.
